Plato’s Republic - A New Hebrew Translation

In the summer of 2020, I started working on a new Hebrew translation of Plato’s Republic. Hebrew readers have significantly benefited from the massive translation project of Yosef Liebes, who translated the entire Platonic corpus to Hebrew between 1955-1979. When I was teaching Plato’s Republic to undergraduate students at Tel Aviv University, however, I soon realized that the students were struggling with the translation almost as much as they did with the philosophical ideas. While Liebes’ translation is a masterpiece, the Hebrew language has evolved significantly in the decades since its publication. There have been, of course, additional developments and breakthroughs in the study of Plato’s Republic, including the 2003 publication of the new Oxford Classical Texts edition (ed. Slings). With that in mind, I began the project of producing a new, updated Hebrew translation of Plato’s Republic. The translation will be available here and updated daily (~1 OCT page a day). This is a very preliminary version, and any comments and suggestions are welcome!
